High Peak Singers looking for new voices ahead of autumn term

A community choir is looking for new members ahead of its new term on Monday September 23.

Formed in April 2022, the High Peak Singers rehearse between 7:00-8:30pm at St Mary’s Catholic Academy on Longlands Road in New Mills each Monday, is open to anybody who loves to sing - they are especially keen to hear from people with lower register voices - and doesn’t require an audition to join.

Award-winning conductor Hannah Brine leads the 50-strong group and said, “The choir sings a rich variety of music, from folk songs to classical, to pop, to jazz and everything else.

“A common question is whether members need to be able to read music. Many of our singers don’t sight read fluently but learn a lot by ear. Rehearsals can move at a fast pace, but things quickly become familiar.

“Members do practice between sessions using the MP3s provided.”

Originally from Leicester, Hannah has brought together other community choirs in London and her home city, with them performing at the Royal Variety Show, the BBC Proms and at the Olivier Awards with Gary Barlow.

“I love the sense of togetherness that we have created at High Peak Singers,” Hannah added. “The choir has a clear identity and I’m looking forward to our new repertoire.”

The new High Peak Singers season runs from September 23 until their end of term concert at Glossop Parish Church on Saturday December 7. There is also a choir ceilidh social on Saturday October 5, as well as taster sessions for new recruits.
