Members of High Peak Stand Up to Racism were out in Norfolk Square on Saturday, calling for Safe Routes for asylum seekers.
The group has written to the High Peak's MP, Jon Pearce, urging for a change of tone and direction from the Government.
Since taking office Keir Starmer, has cancelled the Rwanda plan and pledged to speed up the processing of asylum seekers.
"These are good first steps" said Gwyneth Frances, Chair of the group, "but most of the rhetoric is still about stopping boats and returning people to their own countries. We urge the Government to repeal the Illegal Migration Act and the Nationality and Borders Act which were both cruel, expensive and impractical pieces of legislation. Hundreds of organisations have sent a joint appeal to Keir Starmer to provide safe routes for people who have family here or who come from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq."
They added: "We hope that Jon Pearce will support our call for a more humane and empathetic attitude towards people seeking asylum."
