As part of celebrations to mark the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Buxton is to host the iconic Queen's Baton Relay.
After travelling across the Commonwealth, the Queen's Baton Relay is now being taken the length and breadth of England and will be visiting Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens on Monday 11 July.
The public is being encouraged to get involved with the celebrations and High Peak Borough Council is working with partners including Derbyshire Police and Lex Leisure to ensure people have the chance to watch the spectacle and enjoy the entertainment on offer.
Council Leader, Councillor Anthony Mckeown, said: “We’re delighted that Buxton will be hosting the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in this Platinum Jubilee year as it makes its way around England ahead of the start of the Birmingham 2022 Games.
“We want people to be able to share the experience and celebrate the achievements of the Batonbearers who will be carrying the Baton during its visit to the High Peak.”
The convoy for the Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive at the Pavilion Gardens at around 6.20pm where seven Batonbearers will take the Baton on a journey around the Gardens.
The event will culminate with speeches and musical entertainment from Buxton International Festival at the Bandstand at around 6.40pm.
In the High Peak, the Baton will be carried by seven inspirational Batonbearers who each have incredible stories.
All the Batonbearers are people who:
- Are always willing to take on a challenge and have a unique and inspiring story
- Have made a meaningful contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, or charity
- Are figures or inspiration that positively challenge others to achieve their best
- Have taken on a challenge or cause and made a positive impact within their community
Cllr Mckeown added: “It’s set to be a memorial occasion so please come and join us in the Gardens and let’s give the Queen’s Baton Relay a warm High Peak welcome!”
