Hillmen get their long awaited win

Glossop finally got their first, long awaited win of the season against the spirited Wirral visitors.

Early on, abrasive flanker Jon Tennant received 10 minutes in the sin bin for a high tackle which saw the Hillmen down to 14 but the home side reacted well and a penalty from each side saw the score at 3-3

Both sides were throwing the ball about in glorious autumnal sunshine and eventually New Brighton broke the deadlock with a try out wide to lead 10-3

Tom Dearnaley's boot reduced the deficit to 10-6 shortly after.  Then just before half time, skipper and man of the match, Zak Round, intercepted a wayward pass and sprinted in from 40 meters, to go in at the break, leading 11-10.

The visitors came out brightly for the second half and after good ball retention went in under the posts and were back in front at 17-11

In a topsy turvy game, Glossop winger Dylan Johnston then went under the posts following a kick chase.  Dearnaley converted to give the home side an 18-17 lead with just a few minutes remaining.  From the restart, New Brighton attacked and Glossop's Danny Morris received a yellow card.  From the resulting penalty, the blues kicker put the visitors in front at 20-18 and seemed to have settled the tie.

Late drama was to follow though, as Glossop forced their way back down field and were awarded a penalty, which unfortunately the reliable Dearnaley missed.  Cometh the hour, cometh the man though as Dearnaley was given another chance at the death.  The Glossop stalwart calmly slotted the goal to break the visitors hearts and give the resilient Hillmen a well deserved and long awaited victory.
