Long-standing Whaley Bridge councillor stands down

John Pritchard receiving his Honorary Freeman of the Borough of High Peak

One of High Peak's most tireless and long-standing public servants is stepping down from Whaley Bridge Town Council after more than 50 years.

John Pritchard was first elected on to Whaley Bridge Urban District Council in 1971 and, following changes to local government, went on to serve on Whaley Bridge Town Council from 1973 onwards.

In addition to his role on the Town Council, he was also an independent member of High Peak Borough Council from 1976 until the 2019 election, representing Whaley Bridge and served as mayor with his wife Barbara in 1989/1990.

John has been instrumental in a large number of community groups and helped found the Friends of Whaley Bridge Station.

In November last year, a ceremony was held when he was formally made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of High Peak, in recognition of his outstanding work in the community.
