Lorry driver flees after crash causes ‘significant oil spill’ on major road

Emergency services were called out to the A628 Woodhead Pass in the Crowden area of Derbyshire on Tuesday morning.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said, "We received reports of a collision on the A628 Woodhead Pass, Crowden Stretch, just after 1.20am on Tuesday, April 1. The incident involved a lorry which was in collision with a wall."

"The driver of the lorry left the scene before officers arrived and enquiries are ongoing to trace them. The road was closed while the incident was dealt with."

A force spokesperson later confirmed the driver had been located and was taken to hospital for checks.

National Highways have now announced that the road has re-opened but with temporary traffic lights to keep motorists out of the eastbound lane, due to a significant oil spill. They confirm, “The lorry has now been recovered, but damage caused by a major oil and diesel spill means we need to resurface part of the road. One lane will remain closed until we can complete these works. In the meantime, please allow more time for your journeys and consider alternative routes such as the A57, M1 and M62.”
