Man arrested after police stand-off in Buxton

London Road was closed for a period.

A man was arrested after a five-hour stand-off with armed police in Buxton.

Derbyshire Police were called to the scene off London Road at around 11.22am on Thursday morning (5 January).

Police said that a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

London Road was closed from the junction with Mosley Road to the Tesco petrol station whilst emergency services responded.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was able to fight the fire from outside the property.

A spokesperson said: "At 11:34 on Thursday 5 January, firefighters from Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Chesterfield were called to a house fire and to assist police at a property on Albert Court, Buxton.

"Crews have now left the scene but will be returning later this evening to reinspect the property."

The inspector in charge of policing in Buxton has thanked the local community for their support and patience.

Inspector Anna Woodhouse, who is in charge of policing in the High Peak, said: “I’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while we dealt with the incident in Buxton yesterday.

“I appreciate that this caused considerable disruption for many people with a busy main road being closed for several hours so we are grateful for everyone’s co-operation in abiding by the road closure and keeping the scene clear for emergency services.

“I’d also like to thank Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service for their support with the incident throughout the day.

“Incidents such as this understandably cause concerns in the community so I’d like to confirm that this was an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and enquiries into the incident are ongoing. He remains in police custody.”
