Memorial trees damaged in Chapel park

Vandals have damaged trees at Chapel-en-le-Frith Memorial Park planted in memory of loved ones.

The parish council is appealing for anyone with information about the damage to come forward so they try and prevent any further damage from taking place.

In an incident at the end of last month an oak tree planted by a local family was snapped in two just days after it had been planted. Then this week a Cherry Blossom tree that was planted in another area of the park was also snapped in two.

The parish council intends to replace the trees if they cannot be saved and to install tree guards.

In a statement they said: "It’s obviously very upsetting to the families who planted the trees in memory of their loved ones to see them damaged like this, many people plant trees as an alternative to keeping a grave and it’s just as disrespectful as causing damage in a cemetery.

"The Memorial Park is there to be enjoyed by everybody, and it’s unpleasant for visitors to see the park in a state of damage or disrepair as a result of deliberate destruction."

Anyone who can help the council with their enquiries, is asked to contact the Parish Clerk via email clerk@chapelpc.org or telephone 01298 813320 Monday – Friday 9am – 12:30pm.
