Mishra band set to play at New Mills centre

Echoing sounds from the Indian countryside, Mishra are an award winning folk collective who have strong roots in UK folk music which they infuse with Indian classical music.

Mishra's founding partnership of Kate Griffin on vocals, banjo, and dobro and Ford Collier (The Drystones) on low whistle, percussion, and guitar are joined by John Ball (Rafiki Jazz) on tabla and santoor, Alex Lyon on vocals and clarinet, and Joss Mann-Hazell on double bass, all of whom met in Sheffield where they discovered a shared curiosity for exploring the possibilities of Indian classical music.

The award winning band first came onto the music scene in 2018, winning the Chritian Raphael prize as well as getting airplay for their albums' The Loft Tapes' and 'Reclaim'. They have performed at festivals including Cambridge Folk Festival, Beardy, Timber, and now they are embarking on a UK tour.

Singer and songwriter Kate Griffin told the chronicle more about their upcoming tour and the joy that playing live accommodates them with, “We’ve always loved the joy of playing together live. A lot of it is improvised and we are just jamming most of the time. The magic comes when we are exploring different ideas together with the music and it’s so fun to do this on stage.”

When playing live, the band aims to take the audience on a metaphorical and spiritual journey, Kate also tells us “I hope our live shows are an interesting experience for the audience. There’s more instruments on stage than there are people and the instruments come from places like Africa and India". Moving forward, the band hopes to collaborate with other artists as well as continuing to grow and learn as musicians.

Mishra has a concert at the Spring Bank Arts Centre in New Mills on Friday 14 April, tickets are available on mishramusic.co.uk.
