Mountain rescue hampered by illegally parked cars

Illegally parked cars delayed emergency workers reaching a man who had slipped while out hiking on Kinder.

Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams (MRT) scrambled to Lady Booth Brook to the north of Edale, but sightseers double-parked on the roads around Mam Tor and Mam Nick held up their arrival.

A combination of the casualty’s injuries and snow-covered slopes meant the MRT’s called on the coastguard helicopter to lift the man from the hillside.

“The location in a gully called for a long winch using two high lines clipped together to stabilise the stretcher in the air and prevent it from spinning wildly,” said a spokesperson from Buxton MRT.

“A landing had been considered, but deep snow made it difficult to assess the state of the ground along with an awkward uphill stretcher carry to any possible landing site.”

The helicopter flew the injured man to a playing field in Edale, who was then taken by ambulance to hospital.

“It is worth noting, rescuers access to this incident was slowed down by cars parked and abandoned in various locations,” added Edale MRT.

“Please be mindful when enjoying these beautiful snowy conditions that the emergency services may need to get past where you have left your car!”
