An extra bus service that helps elderly and disabled people to go out shopping has been introduced in the High Peak. 

Provided by Ashbourne Community Transport, the new service will be available on Mondays and take shoppers to Morrisons in Chapel from New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Furness Vale. 

It is in addition to existing services that run weekdays to take residents from surrounding areas to shop in Glossop, Buxton, and Chapel. 

The new route follows a meeting Whaley Bridge county councillor Ruth George had with the providers about the areas they serve. 

She said: “The new service will pick up residents from their home on Monday mornings and take them to Morrison’s in Chapel for around 90 minutes for shopping and the cafe before taking them home and helping with shopping to their door.  

“It is a really good bus service, and it is free for people using the gold card.” 

Derbyshire Connect provides transport to shopping destinations for people unable to use conventional buses because of age, disability or because they live in areas where public transport is limited.  

Services are door-to-door and passenger assistants are available, on request, for anyone needing extra help. All of the services use accessible vehicles to carry passengers using wheelchairs.
