New homes approved for former Glossop mill site

The old Volcrepe site in Glossop

A former industrial site in Glossop, which has been vacant for the last 20 years, is to be redeveloped to provide 98 new homes.

High Peak's Development Control Committee approved the plans for the former Volcrepe Works, located in the centre of Glossop, at their meeting on Monday (13 February).

Developers were seeking permission to demolish the derelict industrial buildings on the site, including the three-storey Easton Mill.

When included in the Local Plan as a potential housing site, Easton Mill was expected to be retained and reused, however due to how badly the building has deteriorated, that was viewed as no longer possible.

Instead, the former industrial buildings will be replaced with two apartment blocks, providing 51 apartments in one and nine in another.

Two historic buildings, Easton House and its former Coach House, will be retained and converted to provide 10 apartments and three dwellings.

A further 25 new houses will also be built on the site, which would be a mix of two and three-bedroomed homes.

The redevelopment will see various access works carried out including a new footway to Milltown and a new riverside walkway, car parking, restoration of Mill Pond, landscaping, and amenity space.

The planning application prompted 69 letters of objection with a further six submitted after revisions were made to the scheme.

Concerns raised included access, flooding, the sheer number of new homes being built in Glossop without improvement being made to infrastructure and services.

The committee agreed to approve the development subject to a large number of conditions, including the satisfactory completion of a section 106 agreement.
