New Mills care home celebrate milestone birthdays for two residents

There was a special day of celebrations at a New Mills care home as two of its residents reached milestone birthdays.

The festivities at Watford House Care Home got under way last Sunday (5 September) when Freda Portman celebrated her centenary.

Freda has been living at the Watford Road home for just a short period of time but staff say she has 'settled in well and made some great new friendships'.

One of nine children, she originates from Cheshire and later moved to Hayfield 15 years ago. Having served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during the war, she was later the Head of Administration at the Electricity Board.

Freda requested bubbles and chocolates for her birthday celebrations with all of the other residents and was joined by her son John and her grandson Matthew (pictured below).

The home also celebrated Margaret McCourt, who turned 80 years old last weekend.

Staff say Margaret was joined by various members of her family who were delighted to be able to share her special day with her and birthday cake was enjoyed by all.

Carinna Mycock, Home Manager, commented: "Birthdays are always a special celebration at Watford House Care Home and by getting to know our residents we can ensure that they get to celebrate in the way they want and with all their favourite food and drink.

"We have great relationships with our residents family and friends and always make sure that their wishes are also factored in to make the day be the very best that it can be. Having two milestone birthdays so close together has ensured that there has been plenty of fun and cake for everyone to enjoy!"
