New Mills sinkhole saga: DCC 'hope' to reopen Hayfield Road tomorrow

Hayfield Road in New Mills could reopen tomorrow (Monday September 2) if its repairs pass final checks from Derbyshire County Council.

The sinkhole saga, which has brought traffic chaos to the town since it opened up on July 29, was caused by a collapsed Victorian culvert related to old mining operations.

“Our teams have been doing everything they can to accelerate the work needed to reopen the road to traffic,” said a statement from DCC. “We now hope that we will be able to reopen Hayfield Road later on Monday, 2 September, subject to work going to plan.

“Our teams will start work over the weekend and they have organised the necessary materials to complete the road repairs for Monday. It is hoped to fully reopen the road but with detailed ongoing monitoring.

“Once again, a big thank you to local residents and the wider community for their patience during these complex investigations since we took over the site from United Utilities. Thank you also to our highways teams for all their work on progressing this as quickly as possible.”

It is expected that the Stagecoach 358 bus will be able to resume its full route once the road reopens, with the Council-funded free shuttle bus that began running last Tuesday between New Mills and Hayfield being withdrawn.
