New operating theatre construction to close road until spring

A road closure will disrupt traffic around Tameside Hospital for the next few months, with disabled parking bays being relocated.

Most of Hartshead Close, which runs along the northern flank of the hospital, will be closed from Monday January 6 until the spring, due to the construction of a new £5.8m maternity operating theatre.

The road will be shut between the roundabout outside the hospital’s Hartshead North entrance up to the Charlesworth Building, which a statement from the NHS trust said will “facilitate the safe and efficient construction of the new theatre”.

Although the works won’t affect the hospital’s car parks, eight disabled parking bays will be permanently moved to other parts of the site.

There will be no change in access for pedestrians, but two bus routes will be affected:

  • The 231 will not stop on Darnton Road

  • The Hartshead South bus stop will be out of use for the duration of the build

Bus stops on Fountain Street will continue as normal, with all services using the roundabout on Hartshead Close as a turning circle.

The government provided £5m for the new two-storey facility, with £800,000 coming from the Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Expected to open in March 2025, the new unit will employ at least five new workers.
