Next phase of works at Glossop Halls now under way

Resurfacing work at the car park at Glossop's Municipal Buildings is now under way, with repairs to the Town Hall clock tower and windows also due to start in the coming weeks.

High Peak Borough Council (HPBC) is leading the regeneration project to bring the Town Hall, Market Hall and Municipal Buildings up to modern standards - which they say will create jobs and new spaces for community use, entrepreneurs and micro-businesses alongside the introduction of energy saving technologies and fibre broadband.

The £7 million scheme is being funded by the borough council, including a £2 million grant contribution from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership via their Getting Building Fund.

The work to resurface the car park started this week and is expected to be finished in a couple of weeks, a HPBC spokesperson said.

As well as resurfacing the car park, additional new walkways and a one-way system will be introduced.

Councillor Anthony Mckeown, Leader of the Council, said: “The New Year sees us moving on to the next phase of works to transform Glossop Halls and restore them to the heart of community life.

“Improvement work to the car park has now begun and we expect work on the windows and clock tower repairs, including the clock, to start in the next few weeks.

“Despite some of the challenges, we’re making good progress on this exciting scheme which will return these heritage buildings to the centre of community and business life. When complete they will be a real boost to our ambitions for a thriving town centre and a strong post-Covid recovery.”

The phase two work, including repairs to the windows and clock tower, is due to start next month and will mean that the clock will need to be temporarily stopped – so from Friday 28 January, the hands will be set to midday.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, added: “I’d like to thank people for their patience whilst this important work is carried out.

“This is the year that will see the much-anticipated restoration of these important buildings completed and further improvements to town centre parking. I, and many, many people can’t wait to see these buildings back in full community use and playing a modern, rejuvenated role in the life of our town. It will all be worth the wait, I’m confident of that.”
