Nostalgia: Bargain hunt…

Glossop Market a month before Christmas 1970 and trade on the cobbled square was described as 'bustling'.

Every stall was tenanted in what was essentially a ‘one stop shopping’ experience.

When our picture was taken stalls were stocking the following: Baby linen, fur  fabric coats, fresh fruit and veg, shirts, tea sets, boiled sweets, firelighters, tea bags, bleach, coffee pots, Eccles cakes, shovels, shoe polish, sheepskin mittens, potted plants, Dutch bulbs and much, much more.

You could do most of your shopping without stepping off the cobbles - and enjoy ‘banter’ with traders who stayed cheerful whatever the worth.
