Glossop Traders Association was trying to 'lure' visitors away from High Peak touristy places like Buxton.
It was planning to do it with a couple of what chairman Alf Smith called summer spectaculars - and tubs of flowers!
When it came to attracting tourists, Glossop had always come a poor second to spa town Buxton with its ornate Opera House and visitor attractions.
But on a bitterly cold snowy day a week into the start of 1987, Alf was telling the Chronicle of the association's plans to turn Glossop into a sunshine supertown!
Alf, who owned a television and radio shop on High Street West, was big on promoting Glossop at every opportunity.
He was a founder member of GALA (Glossop Arts and Leisure Association) which organised the annual carnival and Victorian Weekend and it was these two that formed part of his summer plans.
He said: "The carnival's two day Weekend in the Park and the Victorian Weekend are both colourful events and attract big crowds, but I want to hold other attractions.
"We want to lure people away from the established tourist areas of the Peak District and open up Glossop more. We want to boost business and bring jobs, trade and money into the town."
Alf was working closely with High Peak Borough Council, which was also looking at boosting tourism and had plans to pretty up the town centre with tubs of colourful summer flowers.
Glossop had glorious open countryside, two beautiful parks, but few of the attractions of Buxton, just a few miles over the hill and that's where the tourists headed for.
