Nostalgia: Chart-topping guitarist badly hurt in collision

Fifty years ago, a chart-topping pop band was appearing at Glossop Magistrates' Court after one of their members was badly injured in a road accident.

The bench heard that the Bedrocks - who topped the charts with Ob-La-Do-Ob-La-Da - were loading instruments in the back of a van after appearing at the Scene Around Disco in High Street West, Glossop, in January 1970.

A car hit the van, ‘crushing’ lead guitarist and vocalist William Hixon Cadwell from Leeds, who had to have one of his legs amputated.

It was said at the hearing that the band had to travel from Hampshire to give evidence and had missed an appearance on Radio One.

The driver of the car Eric David Slack, 18, of Kings Road, Ashton, was fined £25 for dangerous driving which he denied and banned for two years.

He was fined £15 for other motoring offences and ordered to pay £40 expenses.

Chairman Jo Bowyer said the fine would have been higher but for heavy expenses.
