Nostalgia: Fauvel Road Fields a century apart

Two shots a hundred years apart of what many Glossop people still call Fauvel Road Fields.

The bleak winter’s day image, taken in 1921, shows the snow-covered fields, which in 1969 became the new home of Glossop Grammar School.

Buildings went up on the top field which borders Dinting Road and part of the lower pasture, which was also used for sport.

The full colour picture shows what is left now the school, which over the years changed its name several times, was finally demolished a few months ago.

The images are from the collection of local historian and former director of Glossop Heritage Trust Mike Brown.

What the next picture will reveal it’s impossible to say.

Derbyshire County Council has plans to grass the plot over until a decision is made.

There are rumours however that the land will be sold and used for houses to help pay for Glossopdale School which was built on Newshaw Lane, Hadfield, a few years back.
