Business was booming at a Glossop factory in the 1940s and order books were full, but the trouble was in attracting workers to fill them.
Wood’s Mill was one of several cotton mills in Glossop and, like most, was having trouble recruiting labour.
Bosses at the Howard Town mill said young people in particular were turning their backs on the cotton industry, claiming that it had no future.
Wood’s welfare manager Mr J Bolton said: “We are trying to break down these old prejudices amongst work people against cotton and we are making every effort to attract people to the industry.
“Some of the mills in Lancashire are really wonderful and it is my job to make Wood’s Mill equal to those.”
Mr Bolton said he was being helped by a management which wanted to see social amenities, better conditions and a ‘one big happy family spirit’ existing at the mill.
