Nursery school's Captain Tom tribute to support local hospice

The children at Hadfield Nursery School have taken part in the Captain Tom 100 challenge to raise money for Willow Wood Hospice.

On 6 April 2020, Captain Tom Moore set out around his garden to thank our NHS heroes. One hundred laps later, he’d raised an incredible £38.9 million for the NHS Covid-19 appeal, and brought comfort and joy to many during the pandemic.

Youngsters at the Queen Street nursery school wanted to honour the national treasure, who sadly passed away in February, and his amazing achievements on what would have been his 101st birthday on 30 April.

The children, aged between two and four, chose their own challenge: some completed 100 star jumps, others made 100 flowers from recycled materials to decorate Captain Tom’s photo.

Several children remembered making Captain Tom’s 100th birthday card last year, and were eager to walk in his footsteps, so they completed 20 laps of the garden each day, finishing 100 laps on what would have been Captain Tom’s 101st birthday.

Each child was thrilled to receive a trophy for their achievement.

Mrs Jones, who organised the event, said: "The children did 20 laps of the garden for five days, never giving up. They were spurred on by a photo of Captain Tom at the end of every lap. I’m so proud of each and every one."
