One awesome auntie in Gamesley

Nicola Francis is well on the way to becoming the busiest 'auntie' in Gamesley.

For Nicola - with nephews and nieces of her own - is the estate’s official ‘extra auntie’.

It’s all part of a National Lottery Community Fund granted project run by Gamesley group G52 to help families with young children.

Pat Javanaud, who runs the volunteer-led G52, sees the role as a return to the days when neighbours helped each other more than they do now.

Where there was always a woman, usually referred to as an ‘auntie’ to knock on the door to make sure all was well.

Thanks to the three year funded ‘Extra Auntie’ programme, that’s the role Nicola had taken on and she loves it.

She said: “People can relate go me, they know that like them I come from Gamesley.”

By working in the homes of Gamesley families, Nicola aims to help establish routines,  provide a listening ear, mentor and give sound advice on a range of topics, or signpost to other services that can help.

The majority of families go to the ‘extra-auntie’ scheme following a referral.

But any family needing support only has to call on 01457 858035, or call at The Hub, 42 Winster Mews base.

Mags Winterbottom, the project co-ordinator, is passionate about the work of G52, which runs so many services in Gamesley and is working to re-establish many that have been lost.
