Organisers explain decision to cancel carnival

A flashback to the 2019 carnival.

Covid-19 restrictions have led to the Charlesworth and Chisworth Carnival being cancelled this year.

Organisers say they’re disappointed to cancel the event, but feel it’s an appropriate decision in the current climate.

Hannah James, the Chair of Charlesworth & Chisworth Carnival Committee, said: “After Glossop Carnival were told, in March, by High Peak Borough Council to cancel their event which is held the weekend before ours, we were left in a moral dilemma as we love organising and hosting the carnival as much as you love attending and taking part.

"However, there will undoubtedly be a great many Covid restrictions and conditions imposed which will be both costly and time consuming to implement.

"There may also be changes to the exit timeline which would mean all the time you spend creating floats and with excited children would just lead to more disappointment and we think we’ve all had more than enough of that this past year.”

She added: "Our biggest concern lies within the spread of coronavirus itself. The vast majority of our visitors are in the 18-49 age group and may not receive their vaccine until 31 July and then this will only be their first dose. As a committee we feel, in order to keep our community safe, the best option is to forgo Carnival 2021."

Last year the organisers held an online virtual carnival, but there are no plans to do that this year so far.

The scarecrow festival, the bonanza and a fun family trail where you have to solve clues along a walk through the villages will go ahead though.

More information will follow in the coming weeks on the carnival’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CharlesworthChisworthCarnival/
