Planning permission granted for Cracken new venue in Chinley

The former Tea on the Green cafe in Chinley has had planning permission accepted to reopen as a bistro wine bar.

Set to be renamed The Cracken, the new owners say it will serve craft beers, cocktails and small plates alongside a range of wines.

They also plan to host live music, and although the proposals have met the approval of High Peak Borough Council, it has left a sour taste in the mouths of some residents.

“Totally the wrong location for a late night venue having live music,” said Damian, from neighbouring Princes Road. “Judging by their own notice they have in the window they'll be turning it into more of a cocktail bar than a bistro as people were led to believe. This area is a conservation area, people who live here have certain expectations from the council to conserve and protect the area from such changes.”

According to Dale Carroll, one of the team behind the new venture, “It would be no different than a normal Bistro or Wine Bar with background music and a live musician every now and again.

“However, we have taken the concerns on board, and are installing comprehensive sound proofing to the building. We will monitor noise and of course take any feedback on board.”

Other locals expressed concern about limited parking space and noise at the venue, which will be allowed to open until 11pm every night.

There has been a groundswell of support, too. Another Princes Road resident, Greg Fletcher, said: “This application will be an asset for Chinley. The centre is already a lovely thriving area and for a minimal impact the village will gain another lovely business. The owners have been very open and communicative about how the business will be developed and managed.”

Although they owners originally hoped to launch the Green Lane venue in August, there is no firm opening date yet.
