Police share theft footage and ask public to be vigilant

The theft of catalytic converters is on the rise, with police warning that hybrid cars are particularly vulnerable.

More than 180 catalytic converters have been stolen across Derbyshire in the last 12 months – the cost of which to replace is nearly £200,000.

Catalytic converters contain, rhodium and palladium, two valuable metals which increased in value last year and are currently at the highest level they have been in 10 years.

Hybrid cars are particularly vulnerable because their converters are cleaner, which means the metals inside them are less likely to corrode.

Now police are sharing footage showing just how easily a catalytic converter can be taken from a vehicle and are the public to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.

Two brothers were jailed earlier this month after a spree of thefts, with one brazen incident, shown in the video, taking place in broad daylight on the corner of a busy street.

The public are being asked to be vigilant and if they spot anything suspicious, to call 999 immediately as this will be treated as a crime in progress.

The video can be viewed at the top of the page.
