Rescue dog hopes to escape to the country after waiting 18 months to find a loving home

The team at Dogs Trust Manchester is on the search for a rural home for a rescue dog who doesn’t like cars – unless he’s in one, heading off on an adventure.

Three-year-old Sharp Pei cross, Manny, arrived at Dogs Trust in the summer of 2022 and ever since, the team have been hoping he’d find a home where he could enjoy a new leash of life in his dream home amongst quiet lanes and heather-covered hills. But, so far, he hasn’t found his furry-tail ending.

Lisa Eardley, Manager at Dogs Trust Manchester, says: “It’s not just humans who want to escape to the country! Manny does not like vehicles so his ideal home is definitely in the country where passing cars and lorries are few and far between.

“When he first arrived, Manny didn’t like getting in a car but that has all changed thanks to our training team. Now he loves it, so whenever he goes off site it’s into the car and off we go to quieter areas and secure fields so he can have a fantastic run around, which is lovely to see.

“We are working with him to get him used to traffic noise, using reward-based distraction techniques and he’s doing really well, but the area around the centre is so busy with lots of lorries passing, so making real progress is difficult as there is too much continuous noise.”

The team say Manny is a bouncy boy, full of character who loves to spend time with his carers at the rehoming centre. He loves to snuggle up and be made a fuss of and if a human isn’t available then his collection of teddies will do. He learns new things quickly and knows all the basics, always happy to show off his tricks, especially if a tasty treat is on offer.

Manny is comfortable with calm dogs when he’s out and about but can be overwhelmed sometimes, so his new owners will need to help him build his confidence around four-legged friends. He would like to live in an adult only home with no visiting children as he can be quite boisterous. Also, he loves to chill out when he chooses so in his new home he would benefit from having a peaceful space to go to where he won’t be disturbed. Like many dogs, he doesn’t like visits to the vet so Manny has been muzzle trained and would benefit from positive introductions to any new vet.

Lisa adds: “We know so much about Manny as sadly he has been with us for a long time, but that makes us really hopeful that we can find him the ideal family. We always work hard to match each individual dog to the right person, and we are confident that when the right person meets Manny, he will steal their heart, just like he has stolen ours.”
