Runner saved by Mountain Rescue Team near Snake Pass summit

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team rescued a fell runner who ‘experienced a medical episode’ in Hern Clough on Wednesday night.

27 members of the crew dashed to the scene after being called out at 7:15pm in an operation that lasted for more than 3.5 hours.

The patient was out with other runners on the moors north of the Snake Pass summit when the incident happened.

“The casualty’s friends recognised the need for help, and using their fell first aid skills and emergency kit, they were able to keep their friend warm and safe," said a statement from the rescuers.

“The casualty was assessed by our team medics and supported off the hill by the team for onward transport to hospital.

“We wish them a speedy recovery.”

The Rescue Team also emphasised the need for good preparation when taking to the hills – both with location technology and basic survival equipment - especially with winter approaching.

“As we head into the colder months the ability to keep warm and provide accurate location information can make a significant difference. A huge shout out to the group for their support of the casualty prior to our arrival.”

The Glossop Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT) was also called out to Hern Clough last summer after a walker fractured her ankle.

All mountain rescue teams are run by volunteers and are funded entirely by donations. GMRT have their own Just Giving page.
