Ruth George says she's "absolutely delighted" to have been re-elected as Whaley Bridge's county councillor, pulling off a victory for Labour.
Local residents were eager to head to their polling stations on Thursday (6 May), to vote for their winner in a battle between two former MPs - the first time this has happened in the same local authority seat in the High Peak.
Running against three other candidates, Mrs George gained victory with 2,544 votes, and a majority of 666 votes ahead of Ms Currie-Jones.
Liberal Democrats' David Lomax came third with 340 votes, while Lucas Jones of the Green Party received the fewest votes with 138.
After reigning as a Conservative MP for 14 years, Ms Currie-Jones left politics in 1997, pursuing her life as a successful writer and broadcaster. However, she decided to make a return this year, partly inspired by Joe Biden’s election success over in the USA.
Mrs George has spoken of how thankful she is for all of her supporters.
Posting on her Facebook page, she said: "Thank you so much to everyone who voted for and supported me, to our hard-working volunteers and my family for their support.
"I look forward to continuing to work hard for everyone in Whaley Bridge snd Blackbrook and to taking forward the work I’ve begun over the last year. Thank you very much."
