'Safe passage for refugees' was the demand of High Peak Stand Up to Racism's protest in Glossop on Saturday.
The group believes that while Britain accepts so few refugees by safer routes, channel crossings will continue and further tragedies are inevitable.
Cath Hughes, a spokesperson for the group, said: "There seems to be an idea that everyone who gets to France wants to continue their journey and come to the UK. But that is far from the truth.
"France has many more people claiming asylum than we do here and the vast majority of refugees never get as far as Europe. We need to develop a kinder, more humane approach to those who come to our shores."
