Scarecrow competition is even bigger this year

It's that time of year where scarecrows are cropping up all over the area to liven the place up.

As part of the Charlesworth and Chisworth Carnival, which is taking place virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, they usually hold a scarecrow competition for people in the area to enter.

But this year they have extended it for residents in Gamesley and Simmondley to enter too!

Organiser Charlotte Winterbottom said: "They had been keen to get involved in previous years and we thought it was a great way to show some community spirit at the moment if more people took part. We have already had about 15 entries from Charlesworth and Chisworth and we have had Cottage Lane Surgery enter from Gamesley, so that's great too that a surgery wants to get involved at this time."

Charlotte has also enlisted the help of a couple of volunteers to help with the extra entries.

The theme this year is Lockdown, thanking the NHS and celebrating kindness and the community.

This is one of the first entries which has gone up...

The deadline for entries is Saturday 27 June and the winners will be announced on the date of the virtual carnival - Saturday 11 July.

Entry forms can be collected from Dysons Village Store and Newsagents in Charlesworth, Simmondley News in Simmondley, Londis and The Pantry in Gamesley.

Elsewhere, an array of wonderful scarecrows are also currently on display in Broadbottom for their traditional annual Scarecrow Fortnight, which is organised by Broadbottom Community Association. This year's theme is 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Meanwhile, the Friends of Hollingworth say their trail will run from June 19 to July 3 and the theme is ‘heroes’. Maps and trail details are available online from the Hollingworth Bakery and the Hollingworth Village Stores Facebook pages.

This one by Robyn, Jasper and India Spriggs is a fabulous tribute to the great work carried out by Glossop Mountain Rescue Team.
