Schools in the High Peak and across Derbyshire are being encouraged by the county council to mark national Relationship and Sex Education day on Thursday (24 June). 

Relationship and Sex Education day is a call to action for schools, families, communities and organisations to take an active role in raising awareness of the important of building, and recognising, health relationships.

It's also a chance to promote and celebrate education around healthy relationships and positive sexual health. 

This is also the first year that Relationship Education and Health Education have become statutory in primary schools, and Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education in secondary schools.

This year, Derbyshire County Council is encouraging schools, services and families to get involved with this year's theme which is Faces.

Schools, services and families are also being encouraged to share videos, messages and ideas to celebrate RSE day on Thursday on Twitter using @DerbyshireEIS @RSE_day #RSEday

Councillor Carol Hart, DCC's Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, said: “Relationships have been shown to be especially vital during the past year and their importance continues.

“Family, friends and communities have stayed connected and found ways to come together while being apart.

“We’d like to encourage schools, families and pupils to share what they are doing to build strong relationships and being together.”

From September 2020, relationships and sex education became statutory in all secondary schools in England and relationships education became statutory in all primary schools in England.

Councillor Alex Dale, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, added: “RSE teaches young people to respect themselves and others. It also helps young people to mature, build their confidence and self-esteem.

“Our general wellbeing is sustained by the relationships that we have with our families and friends.

“For young people, RSE supports their learning about building and enjoying healthy relationships, staying safe and making informed choices.

“Derbyshire schools are doing a fantastic job as our children and young people settle back into school life, with strong, healthy relationships being key.”
