"Serious collision" closes 13 miles of the Snake Pass

The Snake Pass is closed in both directions between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir following a collision between two motorcyclists.

A 13-mile stretch of the A57 shut to all traffic after what Derbyshire Police have called a “serious collision” at around 1:30pm on Sunday, August 11.

Police have told the Reporter that the riders are in a serious condition after the accident in Holden Clough, which is before Featherbed Moss on the Glossop side of the summit.

Hundreds of cars are expected to be stranded on the main arterial route between Sheffield and the Peak District on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Two air ambulances were scrambled to the scene and have already flown back past Glossop heading towards Manchester.

An alert from travel monitoring service Inrix reads: “A57 Snake Pass both ways closed, queueing traffic due to accident between A6013 / A57 (Ladybower Reservoir) Ladybower Reservoir and Hurst Road (Royal Oak Inn).”

It isn't known how long the road will be closed, but an update from Derbyshire Police says: "We are awaiting road surface cleaning from the highways department of the council."

  • The signs they are a changin'

It was the end of an era at Whitfield Community Centre this week as the old Derbyshire County Council signage was removed to make way for new ones. Whitfield Together, the group that bought the Centre for the community, is refreshing the Centre's image. Its new logo will soon go up on the front of the building. Gerry Dominey told us, "It seemed like a significant moment when we took the sign down. It was as if we were saying that the Centre is ours now and we can put our paw print on it. And that felt good."
