Simmondley youngster's Blue Peter badges of honour

A Glossop youngster has won two Blue Peter badges for staying positive throughout lockdown and writing about her experiences.

Matilda Hutchinson, eight, from Simmondley, wrote a poem about lockdown and a story.

Matilda, who was seven when she won the badges, has also been on walks around the High Peak to raise money for charity.

She told Blue Peter producers all about her walks and adventures throughout lockdown with her family and they decided to award her the badges for her good work.

Matilda’s dad, Jake, said: “Matilda has never complained about being in lockdown. She loves being outside and, with the weather, for us lockdown was quite enjoyable as I had 10 weeks off on furlough.

“We walked up over the Nab to Coombes Edge and towards Rowarth, scrambled up to Middle Black Clough Waterfalls at Woodhead, which is rather tricky for the young ones, spotted mountain hares on Chunal Moor and trekked to Seven Falls in Tintwistle.

“All these were with her younger brother, Edward who was only three at the time. Matilda helped him at all tricky parts when scrambling and up the steep hills and she really has kept him occupied during lockdown.”

Here is the poem that won Matilda one of her badges:

It started in March 2 metres apart,

Covid-19 was it just a dream?

They said stay in and make a call

Don’t go near anyone else at all.

Stay safe and wash your hands

Don’t cough and sneeze or you will get a disease.

But through all this and all the risk

I have enjoyed being with my family making lots of memories.
