A sinkhole has opened up in New Mills, closing Hayfield Road in both directions.
Derbyshire County Council (DCC) is in the process of routing diversions, which they warn “could be quite long” for HGVs because of weight limits through Strines and a low bridge at Chinley.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse yesterday evening (Sunday, July 28) near the junction with High Hill Road in Low Leighton, with a stretch of the A1605 set to close until further notice.
Lorries are also reportedly stuck by the entrance to Thornsett Trading Estate.
The Stagecoach 358 from Stockport to Hayfield is diverting along High Hill Road, while the High Peak 61 bus from Glossop to Buxton is running with "severe delays" thanks to another road closure on Long Hill in Buxton.
According to traffic analysis company Inrix, early indications are that the road could be shut until August 11, while one comment on social media has likened the sinkhole to “a portal to Buxton”.
“Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this will cause,” a DCC statement said “But ...we can’t keep this road open safely at the moment.”
