Snake attacks dog in Old Glossop

Residents are concerned for their pets after a dog had been bitten by a snake in the local area.

A dog walker was walking his two year old Hungarian vizsla, Scout, around old Glossop when the incident occurred.

The dog walker didn’t see a snake however, Scout instantly yelped and collapsed to the floor midwalk.  After rushing their injured pooch to the out of hours vet and under close examination, it became apparent that an adder had bitten the Scout.

Luckily, the dog owners reacted efficiently so Scout’s injuries weren’t life threatening, even after being bitten with venom however, the outcome could have been drastically different if the owners hadn’t acted so fast.

Nicola Davies, otherwise known as the “Puppy Nanny” in Glossop, expressed her concerns over this incident, she said: “You wouldn’t think there’s snakes in Glossop so I was a bit worried afterwards but going forward, it’s all about being cautious.”

She also shared her advice on dealing with such events, Nicola added, “Try to keep your pet calm and carry them if possible to avoid the venom spreading around the body. Some vets even carry antivenom which can be used in the treatment of adder bites. You can also purchase bells that can attach to the collar that can help to warn adders that dogs are in the area (even though adders are deaf they can sense the vibrations).”
