Songwriter plays hometown show after rare illness

A singer songwriter in the americana/folk tradition, Glossop musician Matt Hill is a man with stories to tell.

He's performed across the UK and EU, been played on BBC6 Music and Radio 4, performed at Glastonbury festival (invited by Billy Bragg) and even sang one of his songs on BBC1 television antiques show 'Flog it'.

On September 2nd, Matt will step on to the stage at Glossop Labour Club to perform his first full length performance in over 3 years.

Matt explains  - "Over the past few years I had to stop touring as I was struck by a rare condition that made it physically painful for me to sing. A hole in the bones behind my ear, meant I could hear my internal body noises, including hearing my eyeballs move. My own voice sounded like a kazoo through a broken speaker. I became hyper sensitive to all sounds. It also affected my balance and I was unable to drive or even walk very far. It pretty much ended my performing career."

Last summer Matt underwent surgery At Manchester Royal which has meant he is now able to perform live again.

"It's not a full cure but it has helped tremendously. I've been playing a few short sets at open mics but this will be my first full length show in a long time"

As a practicing artist, Matt takes his passion for songwriting into the community. He's been songwriter in residence in a museum and has run creative songwriting workshops in prisons, schools, care homes, homeless centres and other community settings.

"For the first time I'm also going to play a few of these community compositions. These are songs co-written with people who are homeless or living in prison. I am constantly blown away by the talented people I get to work with."

Matt Hill will perform live at Glossop Labour Club on September 2nd 2023. Tickets can be bought online at www.wegottickets.com/event/579060 or in person from Glossop Labour Club and George Street Books.
