STALYBRIDGE TORNADO: Council begins clear up work with 'skeleton staff'

A Stalybridge councillor has paid tribute to council staff, police and fire and rescuers in the wake of the tornado which swept through the area last night.

Local councillor David Sweeton said: "You can see the route of the hurricane. People are very lucky if they have got away with no damage.

"The worst hit buildings is in Hough Hill where the roofs have been peeled back and fallen into the street.

"It has been horrific for everyone, though.

"I've been on the council for more than 20 years and am very proud of the way this council has reacted.

"Our staff were out trying to direct everybody, we've also had our tree people out and our engineers helping the utility people.

"There has also been an absolutely fabulous response from the police and fire brigade.

"Everybody under the Silver and Gold Command have worked superbly together.

"I am really proud of how we've done it.

"Now it's a clean up exercise. I've been on to our people this morning. We have a skeleton staff on because it's Christmas and New Year but we are reorganising the people who are in, taking them off what they should have been doing like bin collections and we are putting them on trucks and clearing all the debris.

"We are doing the best we can. I was watching it all unfold, the wind woke me up and I saw the emails coming in from our top people and I could see it all leaping into action.

"Residents want to know when the clean up will take place but we have got to realise that we have a skeleton staff. But we will do the best we can.
