Tameside and High Peak's most popular baby names revealed

The most popular baby names in Tameside and High Peak have been revealed, with the areas largely bucking national trends.

Muhammad was the most popular name in 2023 for boys born in Tameside, mirroring the national data.  

36 children were given the name. 

However, Muhammad is often used as an honorific title in the Muslim community, with many people called it being known by their middle name instead. 

Ivy is the most frequent name given to girls in Tameside.

The name has seen a meteoric rise over the past decade, going from the 66th most popular name for girls in 2013 to the 7th now. 

Just shy of 2,000 newborns were called Ivy in 2023, with 14 of those being born in Tameside. 

Over in the High Peak, Florence (8) is the most used name given to baby girls. It is 8th in the national list, and as with Ivy, its popularity has grown in the past ten years - it was 29th a decade ago. 

High Peak is the only part of the UK where Harry (9) is alone as being the most popular boys name, with nine instances in 2023. 

However, Harry is also joint-first in South Ribble, where it shares the lead with Arthur.  

Nationwide, though, Harry has slumped to 21st place. 

The top ten names for girls in England and Wales in 2023 were:

As for trends flying up the lists, Bodhi, Enzo and Jax are all new entries into the Top 100 for boys, with Oakley, Musa and Sonny all improving by more than ten places. 

There are six new entries into the Top 100 for girls: Hazel, Autumn, Nellie, Lilah, Raya and Nevaeh. Otillie, Maeve and Olive are among the names that have moved up by double digit amounts.
