The expansion of Glossopdale School is now complete

The second and final phase of the £4 million expansion of Glossopdale School has been completed by contractors, Henry Brothers.

Following the expansion, the school has capacity for up to 1,440 pupils—an increase of 240 places, comprising of 200 extra places for pupils aged 11 to 16, and a further 40 sixth form places.

The new block will provide an additional nine teaching spaces, containing eight classrooms and a science laboratory. It will also provide flexible dining facilities, social spaces for pupils, and extra staff workrooms. In addition, a new Multi-Use Games Area has been built.

Along with local residents and Councillors Jean and George Wharmby, High Peak MP Robert Largan has campaigned hard to extend the school since before he was elected to Parliament.

Conservative-run Derbyshire County Council agreed to expand Glossopdale School in May 2020.

The building design was developed by DLA Architecture jointly with Derbyshire County Council and the School, and the project was entirely funded by Derbyshire County Council.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Alex Dale, says, “It’s great to see the handover of the new phase of the planned Glossopdale expansion, and we’re really pleased that it’s been delivered ahead of the original strategy to help us meet local demand.

“We’re committed to ensuring young people in Derbyshire have the best possible start in life—and access to a high-quality education is at the heart of that. I’m really pleased that the School will be welcoming pupils back in September to make the most of this new space.”

Managing Director of Henry Brothers Midlands, Ian Taylor, adds, “Having built the main Glossopdale School, which has proved so popular, Henry Brothers is delighted to have now delivered an extension to create additional space for a further 200 students.

“We have partnered with Derbyshire County Council on several school projects over recent years, helping to enhance facilities, and it’s great to see the completion of this latest scheme.

“Working alongside employers agent Concertus, DLA Architecture, civil and structural engineer Curtins, and Couch Perry Wilkes for mechanical and electrical services, Henry Brothers has helped to deliver a superb scheme, which will allow additional pupils to attend this rightly popular school.”

High Peak MP Robert Largan says, “I am delighted that the extension to Glossopdale School has now been built.

“I want to thank all those who have worked so hard to deliver this project, including lot of local residents and George and Jean Wharmby, who have been hugely supportive of my campaign. This is a big win for the High Peak!”
