The latest heatwave led to a busy and challenging week for firefighters across the High Peak and Derbyshire. 

Areas that would usually be green and lush have been looking wilted and dry as temperatures reached 30 degrees and the Met Office issued an amber warning for extreme heat. 

The impact of the above average temperatures was keenly felt by those from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) on the frontline - the extent of which has now become clear. 

DFRS has said its firefighters attended 187 fires last week - the highest weekly total since its current incident recording system was implemented in 2009.

Between Friday (12 August) and Sunday (14 August), they attended 80 fires - with the peak being on Saturday (13 August) when they went out to 33 fires. The normal average at this time of year would be nine fires a day. 

A spokesperson for DFRS said: "We want to thank our communities for following our fire prevention and drowning prevention advice, as we believe it would have been even more busy if we hadn't been warning of the dangers and how to prevent emergencies. A big thank you to our partners for continued support too.

"Our firefighters, officers, 999 emergency control operators and support employees worked tirelessly to respond to the grass fires, reports of barbecues in the open, garden fires that have got out of control, hay and barn fires, and crop fires in our county, as well as providing over the border support to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue."
