The Hummingbird Project Declares 2024’s Christmas Appeal Their Biggest Yet
Jo Gregory, from The Hummingbird Project in Glossop, has proudly announced this year’s Christmas appeal as their largest to date, with demand for support reaching unprecedented levels across the region.
“This year, the need for gifts and toys has been absolutely enormous, stretching from Buxton to Ashton and everywhere in between,” said Jo. “By the time we close on December 23, we estimate we’ll have supported over 800 families.”
The numbers are staggering:
- 7,000 gifts distributed – more than the last two years combined.
- 400 elderly packs and homeless packs delivered.
At the heart of the appeal is the Hummingbird Project's private grotto, where families can book appointments to select items for their loved ones. Referrals have come from schools, Crossroads, Social Services, and other local organisations, ensuring that the appeal reaches those most in need.
Community Spirit in Action
The appeal’s success would not have been possible without the incredible support from local businesses, groups, and individuals. Jo expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed:
- Glossop Business Network: Thanks to Heidi Wood for raising £6,000 at their recent ball, which covered running costs and provided additional Christmas gifts.
- Ryder and Dutton: Their generous donation of toys made a huge impact.
- Kwik Fit Glossop: Delivered three car loads of toys.
- Cask & Kitchen and Glossop Pub Watch: Ran a successful toy drive.
- Tesco Glossop: Collected and donated four trolleys of gifts.
- B&M: Provided discounts on much needed items, ensuring the appeal could stretch further.
Extraordinary Efforts from Individuals and Schools
Local students and community members went above and beyond:
- St. Luke’s School: Three students raised over £100 through a cake sale.
- Glossopdale School: Students made bookmarks, bracelets, and hot chocolate sticks as part of their enterprise projects, which were included in elderly packs.
- Maisie Budgeon: Created chocolate wreaths, raising over £100.
Other donations poured in, from monetary contributions to donated goods, allowing the project to meet the immense demand.
Volunteers Make It Happen
Special thanks were given to the dedicated team of delivery drivers who completed 80 deliveries this year alone.
