Thief flees empty handed after attempting to mug councillor

A thug fled empty handed after trying to mug a High Peak councillor on Thursday night.

Nev Clarke, a Labour and Cooperative representative for Whaley Bridge, was by the junction of Tom Brad’s Croft, Canal Road and Bingswood Avenue in the centre of town at 8:30pm when a man approached.

The assailant threatened Mr Clarke with violence if he didn’t hand over his belongings, but the councillor stood his ground and the thief made his escape.

Police describe the suspect as being a stocky white male in his 30s who was wearing a dark hoodie and dark three-quarter length shorts.

A Derbyshire Constabulary statement said: “If you saw anything or have any information, please contact Derbyshire Police on 101, quoting Crime Reference Number: 25000177973.

“Officers will be carrying out patrols in the area to provide reassurance and deter further incidents.

“Please stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
