Toy throwing bully avoids jail after assaulting partner

An abusive bully from the High Peak has avoided jail after a campaign of violence against his ex-partner.

Daniel Maddocks, 37, of Whitfield Avenue in Glossop, admitted two counts of assault and was sentenced to 18 months – suspended for two years – ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and a further 15 days of rehabilitation.

Judge Paul Lawton also imposed a restraining order on Maddocks, meaning he can’t have any contact with his victim.

The first charge relates to an assault on May 9, 2021, in which he pinned the woman down, kicking her in the face and stomach, before launching toys at her and repeatedly attacking her legs.

Then, on June 3, 2021, Maddocks threw a plate of food at his then-partner followed by seven pieces of crockery.

He then attacked her with a highchair, threw a full mop bucket at her, and hit her with a mop.

The assault continued with Maddocks punching her in the back of the head, which caused her to slip on the wet floor and bang her head. Before leaving the house, he took a photo of his victim while she was lay on the floor.

PC Mike Small, who led the investigation for the Derbyshire Constabulary, said: “Maddocks subjected this woman to an appalling campaign of abuse, calling her names and assaulting her.

“In her own words, his actions put her through hell and left her feeling a shell of herself.

“I’d like to thank her for her courage in coming forward and reporting these matters to us, and for her patience and support throughout the court process.

“I hope the fact that Maddocks has now been convicted for these offences will go some small way towards helping her to look to the future.”
