Tree-mendous idea from Glossopdale WI

Glossopdale WI members braved the weather to plant a clump of trees to mark a special birthday.

Mari Brown, who was one of the planters, said: “It was our 25th anniversary and to celebrate it we decided to plant 25 young trees.

“One member lives in the house at Glossop Cemetery and contacted the people in charge, who gave us the go-ahead and showed us where to plant them.

“We then read in the Chronicle that Tameside Scanner Appeal was distributing young trees from the Woodland Trust, in return for a donation to their Scanner Appeal.

“This seemed to tick all the boxes, so a small group of us (plus a couple of helpful husbands) - were to be seen planting 25 trees (or twigs!) at the cemetery near the road, where they intend a woodland area to be.”

The trees are all native British so hopefully will be strong enough to weather the storms and gale force winds that are fairly common on Cemetery Road.

The batch includes goat willow, dog rose, rowan, hazel, crab apple and dowry bush.

Mari added: “We are hoping to have an official tree planting later this year with a guest of honour and a celebration, obviously we have no idea of when we will be allowed to do that.”
