Tributes have been paid to a well-known and well-respected Glossop haulier, who passed away on 30 March.

David Gerald Davies started his business in 1971 when he lived in Simmondley, the firm growing from strength to strength employing many local HGV drivers.

Operating from Chunal Lane in Glossop, it eventually became David G. Davies and Sons - a name recognised in transport circles throughout the UK.

Mr Davies' funeral took place on Saturday 7 May, his coffin carried part of the way to Stockport Crematorium on a classic truck similar to the one he owned years back, before being transferred to the hearse.

The funeral service was attended by his family, employees and friends, many from his lifetime in the haulage business.

Mr Davies was described as a man 'whose life so positively impacted on so many'.

He was known to many as ' The Terminator', after battling back from illnesses over the last few years and 'taking everything that was thrown at him'.

Born in Woodley on March 27, 1947, David met his wife to be Brenda in 1965 when he was 17, getting married two years later.

He worked away from home a lot at the  start of their marriage, living in Hyde, then eventually buying their first house in Simmondley.

David and Brenda bought their first truck in 1971 and that was the start of the family business.

The business grew from three trucks to six, operating from Globe Lane Industrial Estate, Dukinfield.

After having two sons Paul and Chris the company became David G. Davies and Sons Ltd..

David became a good friend of Bert Taylor who owned A. B. Taylor Haulage on Chunal Lane and with Brenda eventually bought the garage where the business is today.

Expansion continued as the company thrived, the fleet of vehicles expanding.

In the late 1970s the family moved from Simmondley to live in Birch Vale.

In later life after years of hard work, David started to take things easier, Chris taking over the running of the company.

It meant a chance for David and Brenda to have more holidays abroad, to America, Dubai and closer to home, Cyprus.

A keen train spotter as a boy, David embarked on dream rail journeys across the world.

He travelled the Rocky Mountaineer journey to Alaska and Banf in Canada.

David also took a four day Indian Pacific journey from Perth to Sydney, visiting his friend Jeff in Perth.

David, as well as his love for his family and a passion for his work, also had a love for animals, over the years having five dogs.
