We Are All Derbyshire portrait exhibition comes to New Mills

An art exhibition celebrating the people of Derbyshire is now open at High Lea Hall in New Mills.

We Are All Derbyshire is the culmination of a year’s work by acclaimed portrait artist and former librarian Melissa Speed, who painted 15 people from the county for the show.

As well as being longlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize and Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize in 2023, Melissa has also taken part in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition.

“We Are All Derbyshire is a county-wide celebration of the people of Derbyshire through a series of portraits,” Melissa said on the project’s website.

“More than this, it is a project about community and a celebration of the good in the world.

“Derbyshire residents have been involved at every stage.”

The entire collection is showing in New Mills until Monday April 21 before a partial exhibition at Buxton’s Zink Cafe from April 23 – 30.

We Are All Derbyshire will then tour another five locations around the county, with the paintings being donated to the libraries and community groups that nominated the portrait sitters.

We Are All Derbyshire runs until Monday April 21 at High Lea Hall in New Mills. Entry is free, with booklets telling the stories behind each portrait available for £5.
