Whitfield comes together for a day of family fun

Last week, Whitfield community came out in force to celebrate the wells of Whitfield, which was last celebrated in 1995.

The event started at midday with a parade around Whitfield led by Glossop Old Band, the community then listened to a well blessing by Vicar Chris Nielson, before then parading back to the recreation area where there was an afternoon of Family fun.

The deputy mayor opened the event and saw many community groups volunteering their time to make various activities available all free, including refreshments from St Luke’s and St James parish church, entertainment from Fab Choir, Griff, GLUG and Kyle Gatley, activities provided by Move More Glossop, OTIS, Glossop Arts Project, Martin Gatley, Mentell, WISH, POW, The Fire service, The Police, David Swanston, plus other activities. We had the Well dressing Queen from 1985/1995 visit, Sarah Porru and her dress, sash and tiara loaned to us by Sandra Parkin.

Councillor Barbara Hastings-Asatourian commented on the event, she said: “We started to talk about Whitfield Well Dressing in 2023, and it was put on the agenda for Friends of Whitfield Rec and Green Spaces  in January, and then the work started Slowly it all came together Over the following months these happened - permissions, bookings, volunteerings, tweakings, fundraising and the most amazing traditional crafting activity ever.”

Clare Hennessy the lead organiser of the Fun day and member of Friends of Whitfield Rec and Green Spaces wanted to say  thank you to all the groups and volunteers who came and made it happen and for the amazing community support. She added: “It was great to see so many old and new faces all enjoying the sunshine and Whitfields great recreation area.“

The four well dressing panels were created by Friends of Whitfield Rec and Green Spaces, Whitfield St James Primary School, Saint Mary’s Catholic primary school and 2nd Glossop Scouts. The panels will displayed for the next two weeks outside the venues of each.

  • The signs they are a changin'

It was the end of an era at Whitfield Community Centre this week as the old Derbyshire County Council signage was removed to make way for new ones. Whitfield Together, the group that bought the Centre for the community, is refreshing the Centre's image. Its new logo will soon go up on the front of the building. Gerry Dominey told us, "It seemed like a significant moment when we took the sign down. It was as if we were saying that the Centre is ours now and we can put our paw print on it. And that felt good."
