The first clean-up day for Glossop’s newly formed litter picking group gets off to a flying start.

Claire Hennessy recently set up the online group called ‘Whitfield Womblers’, encouraging residents of Whitfield to tidy up the area together.  

Last Saturday (June 12) marked their first outing into the community. Some residents came all kitted out with their own litter-picking equipment they’d acquired through the borough council’s new Pick Fit scheme.  

The scheme rewards residents for getting involved in litter picking in their local area by offering a week’s free pass at the leisure centre to use the gym or pool.  

Borough councillor for Howard Town and country councillor for Glossop and Charlesworth, Damien Greenhalgh, came down to join the Womblers as they picked their way through the area. 

He added: “Wonderful to join the inaugural 'Whitfield Womblers' community litter-pick with HPBC Cllr Graham Oakley. A really great turn out on the sunny day and lots of grot spots looking much better as a result. 

“A big thank you to everyone that turned out, the fab Clare Hennessy for organising, High Peak Borough Council for all the equipment and to the lovely resident who insisted Graham and I have a cold Diet Coke to keep cool.” 

The Womblers plan to hold a litter pick on the second Saturday of every month from 10.30am to 12pm. Their next event will be Saturday July 10, when the group will meet at the Pure Vibes centre on Ebenezer Street.  

Everyone’s welcome to attend, but children should be accompanied by their parents. Attendees are also asked to bring their own gloves and litter picks if they have them.
