Willow Wood Hospice has appealed for fresh donations of good quality winter clothes ahead of the upcoming colder weather.
Jumpers, shirts, skirts, dresses, trousers, hats, gloves, scarves and coats are all on its wish list, with unwanted items being accepted at all eight Willow Wood charity shops across Tameside and Glossop.
"Winter is coming and we really need your help to support our local community during one of the toughest times of the year,” said the charity’s Head of Retail, Pauline Lunt.
“Our shops rely on generous donations to keep the shelves stocked. Any donations of winter clothes will be sold on to be loved again, helping to recycle and reduce waste, but also raise much-needed funds to support patients from your local community who need our expert care.”
The hospice in Ashton needs to raise at least £3.3 million per year to keep running, with just under 80% of that coming from fundraising events and proceeds from their shops.
Willow Wood has been celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, but faces a shortfall of £750,000 this financial year, forcing it to find alternative funding sources.
Without the cash, it may have to cut back on services.
On the plus side, its eBay team have had a record-breaking year, raising £50,000 from online sales.
Lillie Winterbottom, Willow Wood’s Communications and Marketing Manager, has led from by example after having a clear-out of her own home.
“I realised I had loads of clothes in my wardrobe and drawers that I’ll never fit into again, and I had to ask myself why on earth I was holding on to them!
“So, I had a proper sort-out and took all the good quality items down to the Clearance Outlet and Donation Centre in Ashton. From there, they’ll be sent to the shops to be sold.”
The hospice provides free care for around 700 local people with life limiting illnesses each year.
